A Tribute For My Nan
A tribute to someone who I love.
My nan Joan Lees was born 6th June 1921 at 51 Unett Street, Smethwick, back when the WestMidlands didn't exist and it was known as Staffs, Worcester. She was the youngest of four sisters.
Her Father William Lees was a trained Tool Setter, her mother Louie Hankon was a house wife.
All my nans family were from the Smethwick area, coming from around the Old Church and Cape Hill.
My nan married Alfred Hinsley my grandad during the second world war. There was a strong gypsy tradition from my nans mothers side, said to be Spanish Romany.
I grew up with my mom and nan at 51 Unett Street in Smethiwck,my father had left my mother when I was two years of age and my sister was new born, my nan took us in and looked after us. When I was 15 we moved to Queens Road, Smethwick.
I was my nans only grandson she had three grand children, my sister and my cousins.
When my mom remarried about seven years ago and my sister moved out about five or six years ago, my nan lived alone, I had left home about eight years before and moved to Brimingham.
I would always visit my nan sometimes walking from Birmingham to Smethwick, eventually I moved back in with my nan. We were very close, we talked and laughed, I remeber my nan used To bring me home a freshley cooked pie from Firkins or the butchers every Saturday afternoon. We would sit and watch the wrestling on ITV, she would also tell me old family tales and what appeared to be family lore, from my great grandma's days.
My nan in someways was closer to me than my mom.
MY nan approved of Tracy my wife as soon as she met her(the only girlfriend to receive the thumbs up .
When my nan fell over and broke her leg, we were all worried, my nan went into hospital last October, slowly her will became broken and mentally she started to decline. I remember visiting after Christmas and no longer recognising her, it was a heart felt blow.
While my nan was in hospital she said she had lived a good life, she had seen her grand children and great grandchildren. She was a strong woman and remanied so to the day of her death.
My nan paid for the buffet at our wedding, when we were on the honeymoon I had a bad feeling I thought my nan would pass away. Two days later I received the phone call she had gone.
It breaks my heart that she is nolonger here, that I couldn't say goodbye to her, that I cant show her my wedding photos.
On her death certificate the doctors put cause of death pneumona, this wasn't true, my nan had been exaimned days before and they had found no trace of the virus. Indeed her chest was fine, we contested the cause of death, it would appear that my nan may have had some bug like mrsa going around the ward she was on, which the doctors seem to have coverd up becuse they wern't sure of cause of death.
My nan the doctor said had let go, even in death my nan had decided and had given up for such a strong woman to have to depend on nurses for everything simply destroyed her.
I will remember the good times, and treasure the memories I have of her in my heart, she was the only nan I had any contact with, I miss her greatly, I find comfort in the fact she is in a better place and at peace, I believe she is now with my grandad and her sisters in the true heaven that we shall only know when we pass over.
I thought I would share this with you my friends thanks for your support.
Goodbye nan I will always love you until we meet again.
